The event kicked off yesterday and will run until 9 May 2015.

Expressing his support for the event, Jeremy Rockliff, Minister for Primary Industries and Water said that the Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to growing Tasmania’s agriculture sector, to create jobs and build on the momentum.

“There is no better way to showcase and celebrate agriculture in our state than at Agfest. For more than three decades Agfest has put Tasmanian agriculture on the map. Tens of thousands have been through the gates at Carrick including national and international visitors. Tasmania has an enviable and vibrant agricultural sector that is growing in success and confidence,” the Minister said in a statement.

“While optimism in some parts is tempered by seasonal conditions there is an overwhelming sense of confidence in the sector. In fact, Tasmanian farmers have the greatest confidence in the nation, according to the latest Rabobank survey. There are exciting times ahead, particularly following the recent Free Trade Agreement with China and the combined $115 million investment in the proposed second tranche of irrigation schemes in Tasmania. We’re confident we can grow the annual farm-gate value of production in the state tenfold to $10 billion by 2050. I look forward to celebrating all that is great in agriculture at Agfest and wish Rural Youth Tasmania and their hard working volunteers all the very best for this year’s event.”

Agfest is run by a volunteer committee of 30 young Rural Youth members and ex-members who want to make a significant contribution to agriculture.

This year, Agfest is the official host of the Association of Agricultural Field Days of Australasia (AAFDA) annual conference.
