Warrego Energy Limited announced the completion of its Feasibility Study into the viability of a Blue Hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in Western Australia’s (WA) Mid-West region.
The Mid-West Blue Hydrogen and CCS Feasibility Study aim to evaluate the potential for carbon capture and storage and use of the Cliff Head oil project and additional reservoirs throughout the larger Peth Basin, as well as the production of Blue Hydrogen and commercialisation through the provision of CO2 management services and the sale of hydrogen.
In a statement, Warrego Energy said the Feasibility Study was completed by a consortium consisting of Warrego Energy, Pilot Energy Limited, and prominent gas infrastructure company the APA Group. Warrego Energy added the Feasibility Study verified that the Mid-West region is suitable for producing blue hydrogen and CCS.
Warrego Energy’s Group CEO Dennis Donald said the Blue Hydrogen and CCS project is another keystone in the company’s Australian strategy to achieve net zero by 2050.
“We welcome the news that the Feasibility Study has confirmed the Mid-West region is suitable for blue hydrogen production and CCS. Developing new CCS projects has become a major focus for Australian and global governments,” Donald stated.
According to him, the estimation shows that the global market for CO2 utilisations will be worth US$70 billion by 2030 and will rise to US$550 billion by 2040.
The Feasibility Study, which concentrated on Blue Hydrogen technology, regional CCS potential, hydrogen markets, project infrastructure, and commercialisation, was co-funded by the consortium.
Warrego Energy said the consortium has now increased the scope of its current arrangements to allow for a more thorough assessment of the Feasibility Study. Before the consortium decides to move forwards with the next stage of implementing and developing a project in the Mid-West region, it will also take a variety of potential commercial arrangements into account, including future participation and timing.
Warrego Energy became a Mid-West Blue Hydrogen and CCS consortium member in November 2021.
