A Perth NRM initiative that focuses on sustainable and regenerative farming practices received a boost after being awarded a Lotterywest grant of $719,000.

Perth NRM is involved in various programs involving environmental management, landcare, and agricultural services. It is currently focusing on urban revegetation, shoreline conservation, and regenerative agriculture.

Perth NRM will use Lotterywest funds to extend its RegenWA community initiative from 1,200 to 4,000 farmers, including Aboriginal farmers and agricultural organisations.

Environment Minister Reece Whitby stated that Perth NRM is a deserving Lotterywest award recipient, and I appreciate its efforts to address the issues posed by land degradation and climate change.

“Its innovative RegenWA program is a great example of how farmers can improve the land they use through regenerative agriculture,” Minister Whitby said.

The award will cover team wages, project activities, and evaluation for two years.

RegenWA assists farmers in implementing regenerative and sustainable farming practices. This includes dealing with salinity, erosion, acidification, pest and disease control, and climate change.

According to the Western Australian Government, the project is tied to a nationwide network called ‘Farming for the Future,’ which aims to develop a more climate-resilient and prosperous agriculture industry.

“It’s fantastic to see this program will include Aboriginal farmers bringing their cultural expertise into managing land across the Perth metropolitan region,” Minister Whitby added.
