Heavy equipment manufacturer Epiroc Australia has launched a new electric-powered loader suitable for demanding mining applications.

The Scooptram ST18 SG features battery autonomy and a complete battery safety system designed to improve safety in the 18-tonne loader segment.

The vehicle’s high-density battery uses both active and passive safety systems developed explicitly for improved productivity.

According to the company, the new loader’s high-capacity batteries are up to 50 per cent more powerful compared to other vehicles in the same segment, resulting in longer autonomy and fewer stops for charging or battery swapping.

The loader also uses a battery-electric drive train that provides improved acceleration, maneuverability and responsiveness for the operator.

It also comes equipped with an aggressive front end, traction control, built-in laser towers for autonomous applications and a kick-down control system.

Part of Epiroc’s Smart and Green Series, the vehicle combines the company’s drivetrain and its Rig Control System (RCS) and is ready for sixth sense functionality such as automation and remote control.

According to Epiroc Underground division Global Product Manager Erik Gert, in comparison to fossil-fueled loaders with similar capacity, the Scooptram ST18 SG eliminates up to 365 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

“It also reduced heat, noise and the need for ventilation, which is crucial as mines become increasingly deeper,” says Erik Gert.

The decreased emissions can be seen as especially beneficial in underground mines and areas close to places where people are working for long periods like workshops, crushers or stationary workplaces.

“With the Scooptram ST18 SG, we’re bringing our leading zero-emission technology to large-size underground mines. This is an important step in our ambition to drive the industry forward to a more sustainable, productive, and safer future,” said Epiroc Underground Vice President of Sales and Marketing Sarah Hoffman.

Epiroc’s electric-powered loader can also be fitted with remote controls, dynamic tunnelling, boomer remote observation and other automation functions.
