Flinders Mines Limited has been granted an approval by the Federal Department of the Environment and Energy for the development of an expanded operation at the Pilbara Iron Ore Project (PIOP).
Flinders said the approval – which has effect until 31 December 2037 – allows the development of additional mine pits and infrastructure such as external access roads, airport, ore processing facility, power station, accommodation camp and tailings storage facility.
According to the company, these changes will have a positive impact on the production of iron ore which will increase from 15 Mtpa to 25 Mtpa.
“This environmental approval, which is an important primary approval milestone for the project, demonstrates that the PIOP can be developed in an environmentally acceptable manner,” Flinders told the ASX.
“Flinders will continue to progress remaining approvals as required, pending the outcome of the strategic review.”
