The Central Coast will soon see the introduction of the first hydrogen-powered electric bus in NSW as part of a local trial of the technology.

Treasurer and Minister for Energy Matt Kean stated that the trial was one of many that brought together business, the transportation and energy sectors to pave the road for a zero emissions future.

“These hydrogen buses are the first step in growing our green hydrogen industry which is estimated to grow the NSW economy by an extra $600 million each year from 2030 onwards and attract $80 billion in investment by 2050,” Minister Kean said.

According to Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway, the trial is essential to transition the State’s 8000-plus public transportation vehicles to zero emissions technology.

“The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government is keeping our state moving forward by investing in the technology that will deliver widespread benefits to our communities, commuters and our economy,” Minister Farraway said.

Minister Farraway stated that the new hydrogen bus is thought to be the first of its kind manufactured in NSW. She added that the trial would be critical to the development of the hydrogen industry in the State.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast and Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said unlocking hydrogen use in the heavy transportation industry will secure clean technology investment, economic growth, and support for regional jobs and manufacturing.

“This state first trial will help determine the most suitable zero emissions technology to deliver the best services for our regional and rural communities,” Crouch stated.

Crouch added that Red Bus has already done a trial with a battery electric bus, so this study will allow for a direct comparison of how electric and hydrogen work in the same place.

The Department of Planning and Environment is collaborating with ARCC, Central Coast operator Red Bus, and Origin Energy on the project.

The new hydrogen bus will be in operation beginning Monday, 6 March, and will last until the end of June 2023.
