Talga Group Ltd announced the environmental permit approval for its Nunasvaara South natural graphite mine, which is part of its integrated Vittangi Anode Project in northern Sweden.
The Swedish Land and Environment Court issued a favourable decision yesterday, 5 April 2023, granting Talga a Natura 2000 permit. The ruling is subject to an appeals period of three weeks. The environmental permit was issued with stipulations consistent with the Detailed Feasibility Study and permit application submitted by Talga.
“This key approval is a significant achievement, and a major step in Talga establishing its Swedish natural graphite anode production. The approval is the culmination of extensive technical, environmental and social studies over many years and has followed a highly rigorous permitting process. We look forward to continued engagement with all stakeholders as we progress towards mining this strategic resource for use in sustainable European battery production,” Talga Managing Director Mark Thompson said.
Following this favourable environmental permitting decision and the granting of a Natura 2000 permit, Talga said the Swedish Mining Inspectorate is likely to rule on its Nunasvaara South exploitation concession application. The remaining local approvals are being processed.
The Nunasvaara South graphite mine is intended to supply Talga’s planned 19,500tpa battery anode manufacturing plant (Refinery), which is now undergoing a separate permitting process.
The building permits for the Refinery were issued by Lulea Municipality on 24 March 2023, and a three-day environmental permit hearing has been planned for 3 May 2023. A favourable ruling and the issuance of an execution order would allow the Company to begin early construction at the Refinery site in the Lulea Industrial Park, possibly as early as the beginning of H2 2023.
Talga is actively negotiating supply arrangements for its graphite anode materials with a number of European battery manufacturers, including previously disclosed ACC and Verkor. Separately, the Company is in talks with a number of EU and commercial financial institutions about financing for the Vittangi Anode Project.
