The Queensland Government has awarded Alpha HPA Limited a $21.7 million grant for the Stage 2 of the HPA First Project.

Acting Premier Steven Miles and Gladstone MP Glenn Butcher announced the grant today while inspecting the project’s first stage in Gladstone.

The HPA First Project uses Alpha HPA’s patented licenced solvent extraction and refining technology to commercialise the manufacture of high-purity alumina (HPA) and associated HPA precursor products in Gladstone.

The Queensland Battery Industry Strategy, which will be announced later this year, will place a strong emphasis on developing varied and sustainable supply chains. The State Government noted that investments like Alpha’s expand Queensland’s critical minerals processing capabilities and guarantee that future businesses, like battery production, have the ingredients they need to bring safe, high-performance products to market.

“Investments like Alpha HPA’s are growing Queensland’s critical minerals processing capability and ensuring new industries have the materials to deliver safe, sustainable, high performing products to market,” Acting Premier Miles said.

According to Acting Premier Miles, the Industry Partnership Program is one method the State Government helps companies like Alpha HPA thrive in key industrial sectors.

“In 2021, Alpha HPA chose Queensland as the home for this exciting project, fast forward to today and the company can now move ahead to Stage 2 and plan for full-scale production thanks to assistance from the Palaszczuk Government,” Acting Premier Miles stated.

Minister Butcher commented, “The HPA First Project aligns with our objectives to grow the state’s critical minerals processing capabilities to support downstream value-adding and export opportunities in new industries such as battery manufacturing.”

Alpha HPA Managing Director Rimas Kairaitis said the support from the Industry Partnership Program for the HPA First Project adds to the project’s momentum and the creation of local supply chains.

“In 2021 we signed the Central Queensland Statement of Cooperation with the Queensland Government, this commitment provided certainty for established and new industries in the Gladstone region to contribute to the goal of net zero emissions manufacturing,” Kairaitis added.
