The Lytton Refinery is due to be expanded to enhance fuel security and supply lower emissions fuel, generating 300 construction jobs in the process.

On the advice of the Coordinator-General, Acting Premier Steven Miles has declared the Ampol Future Fuels Desulfurisation Project a prescribed project and critical infrastructure project.

“The Lytton Refinery is one of two oil refineries remaining in Australia and the only one in Queensland. The upgrade will improve fuel security and efficiency in Queensland and nationally, fuelling our industry,” Acting Premier Miles said.

Acting Premier Miles added that it would contribute to delivering environmentally friendly fuel with lower emissions.

“This will ensure the Lytton Refinery continues to operate long into the future, enabling retention of high-skill manufacturing jobs in Queensland. Declaring the project a prescribed project and critical infrastructure project will ensure timely decision making to help get this project off the ground,” he stated.

According to Member for Lytton Joan Pease, the project will include facility modifications, expansion, and related activities on Ampol-owned property within and next to the current refinery.

Pease said the refinery has been operating in Lytton for nearly 50 years, supporting local jobs and industry.

“Importantly, the project will create around 300 construction jobs and safeguard the ongoing jobs of approximately 450 employees and 400 contractors,” Pease stated.

Andrew Brewer, Executive General Manager of Ampol’s Fuel Supply Chain, commended the Queensland Government‘s announcement.

“Ampol has proudly operated the Lytton Refinery since 1965 and is eager to get the Ampol Future Fuels Desulfurisation Project finalised and underway so we can move to the next stage of the refinery’s life,” Brewer said.

Brewer added, “I know approvals associated with the project are complex and need to be obtained within tight timeframes. We would like to thank the Queensland Government for their ongoing support, and we look forward to working with them as we finalise our own approvals and commence work on this project.”
