Australian listed resources company FYI Resources has been granted Major Project Status for its $269 million high-purity alumina project (HPA) in Kwinana, Western Australia.
High-purity alumina is a processed premium non-metallurgical alumina product used for its superior properties and characteristics, such as corrosion and scratch resistance, high brightness, and its ability to withstand extreme temperatures.
It is used in the manufacture of sapphire substrates for applications such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), in the manufacture of mobile phone and television screens and in certain battery and power storage components, artificial gemstones and special space, aeronautical and medical applications.
The project includes the development and operation of a mine and processing plant to produce high-purity alumina for exports.
Making the announcement, Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, Christian Porter said the project would support 200 people during construction and 140 ongoing staff and bring local business opportunities to regional communities in Western Australia.
“The project will use an innovative process for producing the high-purity alumina which is expected to have a lower environmental footprint than the traditional production,” Minister Porter said.
“Not only will it improve global supplies of alumina, with forecast export revenue of $6.8 billion, but the project will also provide a raft of economic and job benefits for regional communities in Western Australia,” Minister Porter said.
FYI’s Managing Director, Roland Hill, said the company was delighted to have received the formal recognition from the Federal Government for its innovative and fully integrated HPA project.
“The MPS demonstrates the significance of our project,” Mr Hill continued.
“The Importance of the status should also assist in providing confidence for international and ESG investors by providing increased assurance in our development pathway.”
