BHP has announced two changes to the executive leadership team, with Edgar Basto to be appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Geraldine Slattery to be appointed President Australia, effective 1 October 2022.

In his new role as a chief operating officer, Mr Basto will be tasked with accelerating the development of safety and productivity across the Group.

He will be responsible for BHP’s global Performance and Improvement, Health, Safety, and Environment functions, as well as the company’s ongoing transformation through the integration of the BHP Operating System.

Mr Basto has served as President of Minerals Australia since May 2020.

In addition to serving as Asset President of BHP’s two largest assets, Western Australia Iron Ore and Escondida, Mr Basto has more than 30 years of operating expertise across BHP’s mineral operations. He has also led BHP’s global team for health, safety, and the environment.

Ms. Slattery will be in charge of BHP’s Australian operations.

She oversaw BHP’s business, which comprised oil and gas assets and development and exploration activities in the US, Australia, Trinidad & Tobago, Algeria, Mexico, and Canada, from March 2019 until the completion of the Woodside merger in June of this year.

Ms. Slattery has 28 years of leadership and operational experience garnered in the US, UK, and Australia.

BHP Chief Executive Officer Mike Henry said the new appointments will allow the Group to build upon the strong performance it delivered in recent years to drive even better safety and productivity outcomes.

“Edgar’s and Geraldine’s particular experiences and capabilities as leaders, together with the newly created COO role, will ensure BHP is best placed to continue to operate reliably and deliver value in an increasingly complex and volatile world,” Mr Henry stated.
