The Western Australian (WA) Government announced it’s now an Australian Carbon Industry Code partner, advancing carbon farming in the State.
Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis today made the announcement about the move at the Carbon Farming Industry in Cairns
“Signing up as a government partner to the Australian Carbon Industry Code of Conduct demonstrates WA’s commitment to professional and ethical business best practice, as we work together to realise the potential of this emerging industry,” Minister Jarvis said.
Minister Jarvis stated that the WA Government wants local communities, Aboriginal stakeholders, farmers, and businesses to benefit from carbon farming programs.
Government Code Partners are dedicated to protecting integrity, consumer protection, and accountability in the carbon market, laying the groundwork for the industry’s future.
According to the State Government, the move strengthens WA’s reputation and leadership in Australia’s carbon market.
The Carbon Market Institute administers a voluntary Code of Conduct that is backed up by compliance, audit, and investigation capabilities.
WA joins the Queensland and New South Wales governments as Code Partners, along with a slew of carbon services signatories, including project developers, brokers, aggregators, and advisers.
McGowan Government investments, like the $15 million WA Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program, are assisting farmers to trap carbon, earning carbon offsets and enhancing business resilience while also providing environmental, economic, and social benefits.
“The McGowan Government is making significant inroads in this area, with carbon farming projects on pastoral lands delivering more than 2.4 million carbon credits since 2020, as the first WA Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program projects start to take shape,” Minister Jarvis said.
