The Australian oil and gas sector has launched a new public awareness campaign, Natural Gas – Keeping The Country Running, emphasising the importance of natural gas to the nation.

According to the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA), the campaign will emphasise the numerous roles natural gas plays in society, including the creation of daily items, significant economic advantages, the support of tens of thousands of jobs, and the reduction of emissions to help Australia achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

APPEA Chief Executive Samantha McCulloch stated that many people were surprised that gas played such an important role in so many other facets of their lives.

McCulloch noted that natural gas is keeping Australia on track to achieve net zero emissions.

“This public awareness campaign will explain how gas is ensuring reliable energy for millions of Australian households and businesses while supporting renewables and emissions reductions,” McCulloch said.

She explained that gas is a natural ally of renewables, and it is increasingly playing a role in keeping the lights on as coal retires, providing a steady and reliable supply when renewables are unavailable.

“Gas supports tens of thousands of jobs in manufacturing and then there’s all the things in our homes made with the help of gas,” she stated.

“If we removed gas-related products, so much of what we rely on everyday would disappear: beer bottles, the bricks that build our homes, glass in buildings, packaging and paper as well as fertilisers for agriculture,” she added.

McCulloch stated that the campaign will run across all media channels in all Australian states.

“Gas has never had a more important role to play in our energy mix and this campaign will share the many ways in which gas is central to our economy and everyday lives,” McCulloch said.

“The Australian gas industry is committed to playing its part to ensure the best outcomes for Australia throughout the energy transformation,” she added.
