The Northern Territory (NT) Government has announced that the Darwin Clean Hydrogen Hub has received $1 million in federal funding.

The Darwin Clean Hydrogen Hub is a collaborative study between INPEX, Santos, Xodus, and the CSIRO.

The feasibility study will look at the possibility of establishing a clean hydrogen market in Darwin and the potential to deliver clean hydrogen solutions to local and international supply chains.

The Darwin Clean Hydrogen Hub will investigate market demand for hydrogen, renewable energy sites and infrastructure required to produce and deliver hydrogen, storage needs, and supply chains during an 18-month period.

According to the NT Government, the research complements its efforts to build a carbon capture and storage common-user hub in Middle Arm, in collaboration with the CSIRO, INPEX, Santos, and other industry stakeholders.

Middle Arm will be a low-emissions precinct that creates 20,000 low-emission jobs.

The Australian Government’s Regional Hydrogen Hubs: Development and Design Grants program assists the industry with the early development, feasibility, and design work required to progress Hydrogen Hub concepts to investment-ready proposals.

“The Territory Labor Government welcomes the investment into the Darwin Clean Hydrogen Hub. Not only a pathway to renewables, but more jobs,” Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said.

“INPEX and the Territory work well together, supporting jobs for Territorians, and now is playing a role in shaping a future industry in our community. This sort of development has long term social benefits for the Territory,” Chief Minister Fyles added.

Deputy Chief Minister Nicole Manison said INPEX has a long history of creating jobs and investing in infrastructure in the State.

“Today’s funding announcement is an investment in our future technology, which will enable more development in the energy industry, resulting in more jobs and better outcomes for Territorians,” Deputy Chief Minister Manison stated.

INPEX General Manager Northern Territory Stuart Knowles commented, “This INPEX-led study has the potential to support Darwin’s cleaner energy future by identifying new market opportunities in hydrogen. We are proud to be contributing to positive outcomes, here in the Territory.”
