The Western Australian Government has begun an exclusive negotiation period with a major South Korean renewable energy consortium to develop a green ammonia plant near Geraldton.
In collaboration with Samsung C&T and KOMIPO (Korean Midland Power Co), Progressive Green Solutions plans to develop a plant on two lots at DevelopmentWA’s Narngulu Industrial Estate.
Using renewable hydrogen, the facility is anticipated to create up to 1 million tonnes of green ammonia annually.
It is projected to aid in decarbonising South Korean power generation assets, with initial shipments planned in 2027.
The State Government, through DevelopmentWA, negotiated a land use solution at Narngulu Industrial Estate to accommodate the project, paving the way for a new renewable energy cluster in Geraldton to match the proposed hydrogen hub at Oakajee.
“Western Australia is perfectly positioned to provide the land, infrastructure and skills required to develop large scale renewable hydrogen and green ammonia projects,” Energy Minister Bill Johnston said.
“With its exceptional renewable energy resources, the Mid-West is attracting significant global interest and investments from markets such as South Korea, Japan and Europe, seeking to support the decarbonisation of their economies,” Minister Johnston stated.
The Minister added that projects like these are also expected to unlock substantial local manufacturing and jobs in the Midwest.
“Our Government is committed to de-constraining land for WA’s renewable energy sector in the Mid-West region and across the State to deliver new jobs and diversify our economy,” Lands Minister John Carey said.
According to Minister Carey, Narngulu’s strategic location has drawn both domestic and foreign investors looking to capitalise on its proximity to key industrial sectors and transportation links, including Geraldton’s port.
“Through strategic planning, we’ve been able to attract interest in our regions through making industrial land available to build businesses for the future,” the Minister stated.
“The work being done by our Government, through the Industrial Lands Authority, ensures we are ready to meet that demand,” he added.
Narngulu Industrial Estate, located 12 kilometres southeast of Geraldton, is a significant general industrial precinct for Geraldton and the Mid-West region.
“The interest from international proponents in establishing renewable energy projects in Geraldton validates the renewable potential of the Mid-West region and highlights Western Australia’s exciting role assisting with global decarbonisation,” Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton said.
“We look forward to growth in the renewables sector across Western Australia leading towards a better, decarbonised future,” she added.
