Premier Roger Cook has addressed the Western Australia-Indonesia Energy Forum during the Invest and Trade WA Indonesia Connect Roadshow.

According to the State Government, the Western Australia-Indonesia Energy Forum in Jakarta presents an excellent opportunity for collaboration and support for the future of energy transition between the two regions.

“The WA-Indonesia Energy Forum presents an invaluable opportunity to discuss face-to-face the decarbonisation of both our local and global economies,” Premier Cook said.

“Both regions are in an enviable position for energy with Indonesia the world’s largest nickel mining and refining centre, and WA the world’s largest producer of lithium,” he added.

The forum also enables WA energy delegates and Indonesian stakeholders to discuss their respective markets’ capabilities in new and renewable energies and critical minerals.

The forum’s outcomes include a commitment to further involvement with Australia’s Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre, which will assist future collaboration in the battery and critical minerals supply chains.

WA representatives and KADIN (Indonesian Chamber of Commerce) reviewed how the State could help Indonesia achieve its goal of becoming a global leader in electrical vehicle manufacturing.

It comes after WA and KADIN signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in February to encourage cooperation in building a critical minerals supply chain and stimulate investment and collaboration in developing critical minerals and battery sectors.

The MOU emphasises securing critical minerals and battery supply chains to combat climate change.

“With WA’s critical minerals and rare earth resources, our State is attracting significant interest from markets such as Indonesia to support their transition to renewable energy,” Energy Minister Bill Johnston said.

In July, Premier Cook signed a Plan of Action with KADIN during Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s visit to Australia to enhance future collaboration opportunities.

At the forum, the Premier invited KADIN to visit Perth and attend WA’s Green Energy Summit in November to better understand the State’s downstream battery mineral processing capabilities.

The State Government is undertaking an investment and trade mission in Indonesia, led by Premier Cook.
