The Western Australian (WA) Government has launched a new electric vehicle (EV) fast charger in Perth as part of the WA EV Network.

The EV charging site on May Drive links Perth to the largest EV network in Australia. It has a 150-kilowatt charger and a back-up 7.6 kW charger that enables drivers to fill their EVs in about 20 minutes.

“Today is an exciting milestone for Perth with its first WA EV Network fast charger officially opening at Kings Park,” Energy Minister Bill Johnston said.

Minister for Climate Action Reece Whitby also noted that Kings Park is Perth’s centrepiece, seeing approximately 6 million visitors annually.

“The electric vehicle revolution will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve our air quality. It’s an important part of WA’s road to net zero by 2050,” Minister Whitby stated.

Horizon Power’s Carnarvon EV charging site, the tenth station to go online on the WA EV Network, will also open tomorrow at the Carnarvon Visitor Centre on 21 Robinson Street.

Since the inaugural charging site in Geraldton was opened in April 2023, the state’s electric vehicle network has already seen over 1,500 charging sessions.

Once finished, the WA EV Network will span over 7,000 kilometres from Kununurra in the north to Esperance in the south and east to Eucla. It will feature 98 new EV charging stations throughout 49 locations along essential travel routes, with each charging site not less than 200 kilometres away from the next.

“By delivering 49 fast chargers along the WA EV Network, the Cook government is encouraging the uptake of electric vehicles and supporting tourism across the State,” Minister Johnston said.

The EV network is implemented as part of the WA Government’s $21 million Electric Vehicle Fund, fulfilling the State Electric Vehicle Action Plan for WA.
