A 150kW electric vehicle (EV) fast charger has come live in Esperance as part of the WA EV Network.

The Esperance charging station is the first of eight charging stations to be completed in the Goldfields-Esperance region.

After Exmouth, the Esperance charging station is the second Horizon Power location with two DC fast chargers. The second charger will allow four EVs to be charged at the same time, rather than two, in as little as 20 minutes.

Horizon Power and Synergy are delivering the WA EV Network, a critical component of the State Government‘s $43.5 million investment to strengthen EV infrastructure in Western Australia.

“The Cook Government is proud to be leading the way for the rest of the country — delivering Australia’s longest EV network and one of the largest in the world,” Energy Minister Bill Johnston said.

Other WA EV Network chargers will open soon at Coolgardie, Warmun, Derby, Halls Creek, Norseman, and the Overlander Roadhouse, bringing the total number of sites to 18.

Since the first charging station went live in Geraldton in April 2023, there have been over 3,600 charging sessions along the Network.  Synergy fast chargers were installed in Merredin and Southern Cross last month.

The WA EV Network will be the longest in Australia and one of the largest in the world, reaching 7,000 kilometres north to Kununurra, along the South West coast to Esperance, and east to Kalgoorlie and Eucla.

Climate Action Minister Reece Whitby said the WA EV Network provides critical infrastructure that will aid in adopting electric vehicles, paving the way for the State to decarbonise road transport and improve air quality.

“Our investment in the WA EV Network is another example of the strong commitment by this Government to climate change and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions,” Minister Whitby added.
