During the visit of the Republic of Indonesia President Joko Widodo to Australia, Premier Roger Cook signed a Plan of Action with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN).

It follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in February between Western Australia (WA) and KADIN to provide a framework for constructing and securing critical minerals supply chains and promoting investment and collaboration to develop value-adding critical minerals and battery industries.

“We’re committed to growing the State’s participation in global battery and critical mineral supply chains, with a view to further developing our value-adding and manufacturing industries,” Premier Cook said.

The 2023-2025 Plan of Action has three pillars of cooperation: establishing resilient and sustainable supply chains, promoting strong environmental and social governance results, and generating a skilled workforce.

High-level meetings, business forums, and the commissioning of strategic analysis to map the future potential for WA and Indonesia to engage under the three pillars of cooperation will be among the activities to implement the plan.

With the increased demand for critical minerals and the large-scale upscaling of battery supply chains necessary to address climate change, the WA Government said the agreement promotes the two parties’ economic objectives and assists them in meeting their respective industry growth and emissions reduction targets.

“Western Australia is already firmly established as a global leader in the supply of critical minerals and rare earths, with lithium hydroxide and other critical minerals processing quickly becoming established in our State,” Premier Cook said.

“Working with Indonesia, an important trading partner and our closest neighbour to explore partnerships, share information, knowledge and strategies and facilitate business links will fuel our mutual economic growth and green ambitions,” Premier Cook added.

The signing is part of a series of official events, including an Indonesia-Australia CEO Forum for President Widodo, who will be in Sydney with Indonesian ministries and business leaders from 3-5 July.
