The City of Ballarat has joined CitySwitch, a free national program assisting office-based businesses in reducing emissions and environmental impact.

Under the program, CitySwitch aids businesses in mapping a route to net zero emissions and connects them with other businesses on the same journey.

Among other things, participants are urged to cut their office energy usage, switch to renewable energy, and participate in the circular economy.

City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Des Hudson stated that the CitySwitch initiative to decarbonise businesses aligns with the City’s move to a net zero municipality.

“The City of Ballarat is excited to offer CitySwitch to Ballarat’s office-based businesses. This free program will help businesses implement and promote environmental sustainability initiatives while accelerating climate action,” he said.

Over 500 companies across Australia’s finance, legal, engineering, advertising, architecture, and health sectors are participating in the program. The businesses accounted for 19% of Australian office space in 2022.

In 2021, businesses that participated in the program saved $62.6 million by making their offices more energy efficient.

The program aids businesses in measuring their emissions, reducing waste and energy consumption, and transitioning to 100% renewables. Businesses may offset their emissions and become carbon neutral, join the circular economy and green their supply chain.

CitySwitch helps businesses and their staff become more climate resilient by upskilling, mentoring, and educating them. Businesses are provided with tools and help at each stage of the process.

Ballarat Council recognised the climate emergency and the need for immediate action in 2018. For its corporate emissions, the Council adopted the Carbon Neutrality and 100% Renewables Action Plan 2019-2025 in 2019.

In 2022, the Council adopted the Ballarat Net Zero Emissions Plan to attain net zero emissions for the community by 2030.
