Calix Limited (ASX:CXL) announced today that it has inked an agreement with Swedish company SaltX Technology AB to build a pilot scale 200kW electric powered direct separation reactor (eDS) in Sweden.

SaltX, a pioneer of the novel salt-based energy storage system, has developed technology that enables peak shifting to take advantage of excess renewable energy and shift its availability to high demand periods.

Leveraging SaltX’s novel storage system, the two parties have executed a purchase agreement for the design and supply of a 200kW eDS pilot reactor as part of a demonstration project for the SaltX system.

SaltX will construct and operate the pilot reactor, while Calix will provide a non-exclusive, non-transferable limited license to SaltX to use the eDS reactor for the pilot plant.

The reactor will share similarities with Calix’s BATMn reactor at its Bacchus Marsh facility in Victoria.

If the pilot is deemed successful, Calix plans to follow along with further arrangements to scale up a megawatt-scall small commercial system,

“The use of Calix’s technology in base load energy storage system was foreshadowed as we developed our SOCRATCES project in Europe – which is based upon solar-powered calcium looping and is progressing well (https://socratces.eu/) for load balancing applications as the grid de-carbonises,” explained MD & CEO of Calizx, Phil Hodgson.

“We are very pleased to be working with SaltX on it system now also. This system has a great load balancing applications as the grid de-carbonises.”

Commenting on the agreement, Carl-Johan Liner, CEO of SaltX, said: “Calix is a pioneer in developing sustainable solutions for many industries and therefore I believe this co-operation will have many benefits in SaltX mission of developing energy storage solutions that will have a real change for the renewable energy sector.”
