The NSW Government has announced the opening of Coregas H2Station, Australia’s first commercial hydrogen refuelling station for zero emissions heavy road vehicles.
The hydrogen fuelling station, located within the Coregas Port Kembla industrial gas facility, was partially funded by a $500,000 State Government grant.
Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty stated that heavy road transport is a key in the carbon-emitting industry, and Port Kembla is now leading the way towards a more varied energy future with the launch of the Coregas H2Station today.
“The NSW Government is proud to have supported this world-leading project to refuel Australia’s first hydrogen-powered heavy road vehicle under Round 4 of the Port Kembla Community Investment Fund,” Minister Moriarty said.
According to Minister Moriarty, the Coregas H2Station will be the first practical piece enabling infrastructure to decarbonise the region’s 7000 heavy vehicles as the State transitions to a cleaner, greener future.
Minister for the Illawarra and the South Coast Ryan Park stated that Port Kembla is poised to become a centre for Australia’s growing hydrogen sector.
“The H2 Station will facilitate the introduction of zero emissions hydrogen powered trucks to the Illawarra-Shoalhaven to demonstrate the technology’s potential to improve energy security, create jobs and investment, and decarbonise the transport sector,” Minister Park said.
“Zero emissions trucks will be able to refuel at the Coregas refuelling station using hydrogen produced at Port Kembla and showcase the viability of introducing hydrogen-powered fleet vehicles to greater NSW,” he added.
Member for Wollongong Paul Scully said the initiative puts Port Kembla at the forefront of the developing global hydrogen sector.
“The hydrogen refuelling station represents an exciting opportunity to build our region’s skills and capacity in readiness for Australia’s zero emissions economy,” Scully stated.
According to Coregas Executive General Manager Alan Watkins, the Coregas H2Station will allow the Illawarra region to fill up to ten zero-emission hydrogen vehicles daily.
“We believe this project is a game changer for Australia that will lead the clean mobility revolution by demonstrating the suitability of hydrogen powered vehicles as a commercially ready solution,” Watkins said.
Coregas was one of 15 initiatives to receive $2.1 million in funding under Round 4 of the Port Kembla Community Investment Fund.
The fund is a competitive, merit-based program that provides financial assistance to initiatives that rehabilitate Port Kembla and its surrounding regions for the benefit of the community.
