Darwin’s Ship Lift has hit yet another significant milestone, with two tenderers selected for the project’s third and final procurement phase.

Territorial Civil and the Clough-BMD Joint Venture have advanced to the design development stage of the project, which will see Northern Australia’s largest Ship Lift erected in Darwin.

According to the official media release, the facility will be able to lift 5,000 tons and will be used to service ships in the Southeast Asian region.

Over the next several months, the firms will individually deliver critical design and development work to guarantee that the Ship Lift is ready to help the Territory build and grow a robust marine service and supply sector.

The major appointments come after the selection of a design and construction contractor in the second round of the procurement process.

The choice of companies with extensive local experience demonstrates the Territory’s ability to produce world-class projects, which will attract global expertise to the Territory’s benefit.

The ship lift will allow Darwin to develop a vibrant marine service and supply sector, which will create jobs and help businesses grow. It will also be a driving force behind the creation of a marine services precinct at East Arm.

The final design and construction contractor will be chosen in the second quarter of 2022, with construction starting later that year.

“The investment in this major national project means expanding our marine industry and providing new opportunities for businesses and more jobs for Territorians. This project is going from strength to strength – just last month we saw it progress with submission of its draft Environmental Impact Statement, and now we have shortlisted two capable businesses with a strong local presence in the Territory to bring the next stage to life,” said  Minister for Mining and Industry Nicole Manison.

“The Territory Labor Government thanks McConnell Dowell Constructors (Aust) Pty Ltd, Watpac Construction Pty Ltd and Sitzler Pty Ltd for their participation in the Expression of Interest and Request for Proposal stages of the project.”

The Ship Lift will be operational from late 2024.
