The Northern Territory Government has issued environmental approvals for the Mt Bundy Gold Project as part of the Project’s approval process.

The Mt Bundy Gold Project, which was granted Major Project Status in 2022, seeks to restart three mines on the Arnhem Highway about 100 kilometres south of Darwin.

Primary Gold Pty Ltd, the Project’s proponents, intend to restart open cut gold mining in Rustlers Roost and Quest 29, expanding all current open cut pits and developing two new pits.

Tom’s Gully, an underground mine, was given environmental approval in 2020.

Through exploration and mining studies, the gold ore resource has grown from 1 million ounces to 3 million ounces since 2018.

Early work has commenced with the completion of a new bridge and the start of geotechnical drilling.

The company is working with Mintrex Engineering to complete the Definitive Feasibility Study, with more construction to follow in 2023 and 2024.

The Mt Bundy Gold Project is estimated to provide 300 full-time jobs over a ten-year period once operations begin.

The $412 million project is expected to generate more than 135,000 ounces of gold annually on average.

“The Mt Bundy Gold Project is great news for local jobs and mining near Darwin, creating hundreds of well-paying jobs for the next decade,” Minister for Mining and Industry Nicole Manison said.

Minister Manison stated that gold is required not just for jewellery and investments but also for the manufacture of electronics, high-tech health care, and aerospace, and the Northern Territory possesses the necessary supply.

“The Territory Labor Government is delivering more mining projects, strengthening the economy and doing so in an environmentally responsible manner,” Minister Manison added.
