New data indicates that electric vehicle (EV) ownership in the ACT is expected to more than double in the last 12 months by New Year’s Day.

Minister for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction Shane Rattenbury stated that EVs have doubled in the Territory from 1% to 2% in the last year.

“The ACT has the highest rate of EV ownership per capita in Australia, and recent data shows how Canberrans are really embracing the shift to zero emissions travel,” Minister Rattenbury said.

The Minister reported that in November, 23.9% of new cars in the ACT were EVs, with 429 new EVs registered in Canberra, slightly below the 441 ZEVs purchased in 2019.

“This is great news to end the year on, showing that the transition to EVs is well on the way, with numbers continuing to rise. This puts us in good stead to meet our target of 80-90 per cent of new car sales being zero emissions vehicles by 2030,” he noted.

According to him, the Territory currently has over 125 public EV chargers, with more on the way to reach 180 by 2025, with efforts to install more to support more EVs on roads.

“It’s important that Canberrans have the opportunity to access sustainable transport options including EVs, which is why we recently held EV Drive Days, in partnership with NRMA, to give people a chance to try out an EV for themselves,” he added.
