On the heels of the State’s largest harvest, the Western Australian (WA) Government‘s investment in research and development is assisting in the growth and future-proofing of WA‘s significant grains industry.
WA grain growers harvested the State’s second consecutive record crop, reaching 26 million tonnes in 2022-23.
At an industry gathering prior to the second day of the Grains Research and Development Corporation Grains Research Updates, Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to research and development to promote growth in the grains industry.
“The contribution of the Western Australian grains industry to the State’s economy continues to grow, with this season’s harvest anticipated to contribute around $10 billion.” Minister Jarvis said.
Over 25 experts from the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will present at the research updates, covering themes ranging from plant breeding and agronomy to crop protection and lowering grain carbon emissions.
“DPIRD’s researchers have a strong presence at this year’s event, delivering information and research findings that can make a real difference to farm businesses and the grains industry,” Minister Jarvis stated.
The State Government also welcomed the accession of the Grower Group Alliance to the historic Western Australian Agricultural Research Collaboration, with the McGowan Government providing $25 million over three years.
The Grower Group Alliance is a producer-led network promoting innovation and acceptance, and this cooperation will provide a critical grower perspective to assist in driving future research and development.
Grains production is the most valuable agricultural industry in the State, with this season’s harvest anticipated to be worth $10 billion.
Minister Jarvis said the record harvest this season is a testament to the hard work of WA growers.
“There are always challenges for farmers, whether it be climate change, rising input costs or pests and disease – so backing industry with a robust research and development sector is vital,” Minister Jarvis added.
