Horizon Power and local renewable energy company West Australian Alternative Energy (WAAE) have formed a joint venture to accelerate Western Australia’s (WA) decarbonisation.
According to the WA Government, the joint venture brings together substantial renewable energy system expertise.
Horizon Power has acquired a 50% stake in WAAE, which will help the McGowan Government meet its goal of reducing government emissions by 80% by 2030.
“Congratulations to Horizon Power and West Australian Alternative Energy on their joint venture. The partnership will help tackle the supply chain issues and workforce constraints being felt across the country and support the acceleration of renewable energy solutions in our State,” Energy Minister Bill Johnston said.
The State Government said the investment would tackle the renewable energy sector’s broad supply chain concerns, affecting equipment and project delivery, and a constrained local workforce spurred by unprecedented demand for renewable energy installations.
“The new partnership is a positive step forward on our decarbonisation journey, supporting the State Government and Horizon Power’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” Minister Johnston stated.
WAAE was founded in Busselton in 2012 and has established a good reputation as a specialist provider of high-quality commercial-scale solar energy solutions.
The Clean Energy Council-accredited company employs over 20 full-time local employees, with staff numbers likely to rise in the coming years.
The partnership is intended to help Horizon Power fulfil its carbon reduction emissions objective across its service region of 34 microgrids and 117 isolated settlements using solar and low-emissions projects.
WAAE successfully completed Horizon Power’s Kalumburu hybrid solar project in March 2022, assisting the remote Kimberley community in transitioning to sustainable energy. WAAE has also completed various other solar projects for commercial businesses in Perth, rural and regional WA, over the last two decades.
