IHI Corporation, through its subsidiary, IHI Engineering Australia Pty Ltd, has joined a consortium of Australian and global energy players in the developing HyNQ (North Queensland Clean Energy Project).
Current consortium partners include Idemitsu Australia, Idemitsu Kosan Co Ltd subsidiary, Queensland Government-owned CS Energy, and Energy Estate.
Energy Estate co-founder Vincent Dwyer commented, “Over recent months our consortium has accelerated the development of the HyNQ project and completed a comprehensive pre-FEED study. IHI Corporation is recognised as a global leader and has already demonstrated its commitment to supporting the development of the green hydrogen industry in Australia. We are delighted that IHI is joining CS Energy, Idemitsu and our team at Energy Estate and together we can create a world class green export hub at Abbot Point.”
“IHI Corporation is a global technology leader in the use of green ammonia to decarbonise industry – in Japan and other markets around the world. We see HyNQ as an opportunity to secure long term supplies of green ammonia for the Japanese market and build upon the foundations of the strong and enduring partnership between Queensland and Japan,” IHI Corporation Associated Director Kensuke Yamamoto said.
The renewable energy project in Abbot Point, North Queensland, uses wind and solar energy to generate over 1GW of electrolyser capacity. The project will produce green ammonia and liquid hydrogen for export markets and domestic customers. It’s strategically located within the Collinsville Renewable Energy Zone recently announced by the State Government and will benefit from access to an existing deep water port.
The Queensland Government is investing $8.5 million in the Abbot Point Activation Initiative under the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan to accelerate the development of Abbot Point as a green export hub. The investment will progress the master planning, development, and infrastructure arrangements for water and power supplies needed for hydrogen production in North Queensland.
The consortium said it is dedicated to enhancing Abbot Point’s infrastructure, promoting large-scale green ammonia exports, and decarbonising domestic industries to unlock world-class renewable energy and critical mineral opportunities in North Queensland.
Pre-FEED work has been completed on time in Q3 2023, and the current project timeline calls for the FEED stage of development to begin in Q1 24 with a final investment decision in 2025.
