Lynas Rare Earths has begun construction of the Rare Earths Processing Facility in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
The new plant will process rare earth materials from the company’s Mt Weld mine, generating approximately 500 construction and 200 ongoing jobs in the region.
Once operational, it will create up to 128 jobs, in addition to the 290 constructions jobs during the constructions phase.
The Lynas Mt Weld mine in Western Australia is one of the world’s premier rare earths deposits.
The sod-turning ceremony was attended by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston.
“This is an exciting moment for Kalgoorlie and the Western Australian economy, as we take an important step in diversifying our economy and creating new jobs,” the Minister said.
“Western Australia is in a prime position to establish our place at the centre of the global critical minerals supply chain for generations to come.
“The McGowan Government and Lynas Rare Earths have worked with local contractors and workers to bring this vision to fruition for the benefit of our State and to benefit communities in the Goldfields.”
The company announced plans to build the rare earth processing plant in 2019, while ministerial approval was granted in February 2022.
