The MCA Climate Action Plan-Progress Report 2023 has shown that scope 1 emissions from Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) full-member mining facilities reported to the safeguard mechanism decreased by 9.3% in FY22.

The report confirms that member emissions in the safeguard mechanism and National Greenhouse and Energy Report scheme decreased during FY22, indicating industry progress towards net zero by 2050.

MCA members’ scope 1 and 2 emissions decreased by more than 7% in FY22, according to the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme (NGERs).

According to MCA, the report reinforces and highlights the mining industry‘s ongoing effort to reduce emissions as it strives towards net zero emissions by 2050.

In the three years since the Council released the Climate Action Plan, the sector has made significant progress while supporting Australian jobs, royalties, and taxes to state and federal governments.

The report is the third annual report since the launch of the MCA Climate Action Plan in 2020, and it includes an update on the 10 actions listed in the Climate Action Plan and an update on modifications to the policy framework of the Safeguard Mechanism.

It also details the effort being made by the industry to develop and deploy low-emission technologies, with over 20 case studies highlighting firm initiatives on the ground.

Case studies showcase various technologies and initiatives members utilise to reduce emissions across their value chains, including gravitational energy, mine electrification, climate planning, renewable energy, fuel swapping, carbon capture and storage, autonomous haulage, and pumped hydro.

The third Climate Action Plan progress report was released during Minerals Week 2023, the MCA’s annual opportunity to meet with Canberra decision-makers.
