Five Monash University researchers have been granted a total of $2.95 million in the most recent round of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Projects initiative.

The Linkage Projects initiative allows Australian researchers to work with industry partners and community organisations to develop innovative solutions and obtain economic and other advantages from their research.

Professor Huanting Wang has received $689,098 for developing innovative protonic ceramic electrolysis cells to increase the efficiency of hydrogen production and carbon dioxide conversion utilising renewable energy.

Associate Professor Michelle Dunstone received a $411,960 grant to research the use of protein nanopores for quick, on-the-spot multiplex detection of DNA samples.  This intends to improve present procedures, which are frequently time-consuming and need DNA amplification and specialised facilities.

Associate Professor Natalie Trevaskis was given $615,316 to create a roadmap of the needed qualities for lymphatic targeting and find innovative lipid nanoemulsions that function in tandem with lipid biomimetics to improve lymphatic imaging.

Dr Alexandra Pavlova was awarded $724,622 to investigate how genomic research may contribute to the preservation of four endangered species and create new ways for conservation decision-making and conservation training.

Professor Douglas MacFarlane received a $510,000 grant to develop and test new high-performance electrolyte compositions with improved thermal stabilising additives for safe, long-term battery operation. The project aims to create long-term, large-scale energy storage technologies to help Australia’s energy industry transition to renewables.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water, and Planning, Woodside Energy Group, and Oxford Nanopore Technologies are among the research partners collaborating on the projects.

Professor Rebekah Brown, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), stated that the ARC Linkage Projects initiative provides a critical opportunity for researchers to interact and cooperate with industry to increase Monash’s research impact.

“This round of funding across a broad range of projects reflects the breadth of research capabilities and the depth of talent we have at Monash. Congratulations to the researchers on this fantastic outcome,” Professor Brown said.
