Monash University is set to host a Blue Zone pavilion at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, UAE, from 30 November to 12 December.
Monash University, with a global presence in Australia, Asia Pacific, Europe, India, and China, is dedicated to addressing climate change. Its Impact 2030 strategy focuses on climate change education and research, fostering climate action partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.
Monash University will make history as the first Australian university to host a Pavilion within the coveted UNFCCC-administered Blue Zone at COP28, as an official ‘Observer Organisation’ of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and a continuous attendee since 2016.
The pavilion will serve as a collaborative place for Monash professionals, scholars, and students to convene, explore, and promote climate action solutions with partners from Asia Pacific and beyond.
Monash University’s COP28 delegation will feature both staff and students who will share their climate action expertise and knowledge while establishing connections across the significant topics of Just energy transitions, Climate and health, Antarctica and oceans, Indigenous wisdom, and Education and youth.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Senior Vice-President Professor Rebekah Brown will lead the University’s delegation at COP28, focusing on enhancing international cooperation and collaboration among governments, industry, communities, NGOs, and universities to combat climate change.
“Monash is thrilled to participate in COP28. Our Pavilion will serve as a nexus for our scientific community, scholars, students, and partners to showcase their expertise, fostering collaboration with global policymakers and change makers in our collective pursuit of a sustainable and just world for all,” Professor Brown stated.
The largest global climate change forum, COP28, is slated to bring together delegates from 198 countries and 75,000 participants for a global stocktake, the first since the 2015 Paris Agreement.
