The Mornington Peninsula Shire has opened a new public electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Flinders.
The recently installed fast charger, located in the roadside parking spaces outside Wood Street Shopping Centre, can charge a regular EV from zero to around 80% capacity in an hour.
Fully funded by the Victorian Government‘s Destination Charging Across Victoria grant program and Evie Networks, the new charging station will assist in expanding the Peninsula’s EV charging network. It will also aid in the promotion of EV adoption throughout the community.
In line with the Shire’s goal to net zero community emissions, the service will be run by Evie Networks, who have pledged to power the charger entirely with renewable energy. This means that residents and tourists can charge their EVs with clean, zero-emission energy, reducing their dependency on fossil fuels.
Ward Councillor David Gill commented, “This is a terrific initiative with Council, community and the State Government working together to implement ‘Toward Zero’ emissions policies to help meet the challenges of climate change.”
“Evie Networks are excited to continue the expansion of our network alongside our partners DEECA and the Mornington Peninsula Shire to so many key tourist destinations. With Evie charging stations from Dandenong, Chelsea and Carrum Downs to Sorrento, Hastings and now Flinders – we’re opening up new journeys for EV drivers with reliable charging infrastructure across the Peninsula,” Evie Networks Head of Emerging Technology Ed Lynch-Bell said.
