New electric vehicle (EV) fast charging sites have officially opened in Karratha, Exmouth, and Kununurra as part of the Western Australian (WA) Government’s WA EV Network.

The Horizon Power charging stations feature a 150 kilowatt (kW) fast charger, allowing drivers to charge their EVs in as little as 20 minutes. Exmouth’s charging station includes an additional DC fast charger, allowing four EVs to be charged simultaneously.

“We are delighted Karratha, Exmouth and Kununurra have joined the WA EV Network, with many more fast chargers opening soon,” Energy Minister Bill Johnston said.

“Western Australia’s transition to a cleaner, greener electric vehicle future is well underway, with the WA EV Network rolling out across the State,” Minister Johnston added.

The WA EV Network, delivered by Horizon Power and Synergy as part of the State Government’s $43.5 million investment to expand EV infrastructure, contains 98 charging stations in 49 locations connecting Perth to regional Western Australia.

“The Cook Government is committed to building the WA EV Network, which will be the longest in Australia, providing vital infrastructure to open-up our vast State for electric vehicles,” Climate Action Minister Reece Whitby said.

Since the launch of the first charging site in Geraldton in April 2023, over 3,200 charging sessions have been conducted along the Network.

Other charging sites will soon open in Esperance, Warmun, Derby and Halls Creek.

“Other chargers in Fortescue River, Whim Creek, Port Hedland, Pardoo and Sandfire will open in August 2024,” Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel noted.
