The Yarra City Council in Victoria is supporting Yarra Energy Foundation’s (YEF) Wired for Tomorrow initiative, which aims to bolster the transition to an all-electric precinct by developing a roadmap on how communities can transition off gas.

The Wired for Tomorrow initiative will:

  • utilise existing community momentum for electrification
  • provide an inspiring vision for attaining a large-scale, all-electric future
  • Identify the critical stages and key stakeholders required to bring this vision to fruition.

Yarra City Council Mayor Edward Crossland emphasised the significance of developing a clear path towards electrification.

“Yarra City Council in partnership with the Yarra Energy Foundation is laying the essential groundwork to understand the challenges and opportunities to transition from gas to renewable energy,” Mayor Crossland said.

YEF has chosen a precinct in the 3068 postcode to serve as a model for its all-electric objective. The area was chosen for its variety of building types and services, technological compatibility, and active community.

The Council and YEF will collaborate with Electrify 3068, a local community group, to develop and advance an all-electric vision.

Yarra Energy Foundation CEO Dean Kline noted the importance of community participation in electrification.

“Transitioning Yarra to an all-electric precinct is a massive task, and one that requires everyone to do their part,” Kline said.

“Through the Wired for Tomorrow initiative we’re looking to develop knowledge and support local communities on the journey to all-electric precincts,” he added.
