NSW Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty has announced that applications for a new round of the Aboriginal Fishing Trust Fund (AFTF) are now open, with a total of $500,000 on offer.

The AFTF, according to Minister Moriarty, aids Aboriginal commercial fisheries, aquaculture, and aquatic tourism-related enterprises, as well as fisheries research and cultural education that promotes and protects cultural fishing throughout NSW.

“The NSW Government recognises the significance fishing has to Aboriginal communities and culture, as well as the vital role the trust fund plays in promoting cultural fishing and economic opportunities,” Minister Moriarty said.

“We are committed to the protection and enhancement of Aboriginal cultural and commercial fishing activities,” the Minister added.

Minister Moriarty indicated that applications sponsored during the previous fiscal year included:

  • the acquisition of capital equipment for an existing family-run coastal commercial fishing operation
  • the launch of a new carp removal service
  • 4 cultural fishing camps/workshops in NSW, and
  • a research project aimed at documenting traditional seaweed usage and revitalising cultural fishing.

The application period for the new financing cycle begins on Wednesday, 31 May, and ends on Friday, 25 August 2023.

NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty David Harris is urging Aboriginal companies and communities to apply for financing through the current round of the AFTF.

“Priority areas for funding include those in areas of research, education and training, fishing access and facilities, aquatic habitat rehabilitation and protection, the enhancement of cultural fishing and providing economic opportunities,” Minister Harris said.
