The NSW Opposition is looking to introduce legislation aimed at preventing offshore coal, gas, mineral and petroleum mining and exploration in NSW waters.
The proposed legislation aims to fulfil an election commitment and renew calls for the Federal Government to prevent offshore mining in neighbouring Commonwealth waters.
The Minerals Legislation Amendment (Offshore Drilling and Associated Infrastructure Prohibition) Bill 2023 also aims to address beach erosion issues by allowing mineral exploration or mining activities in NSW waters for beach nourishment where a clear public benefit can be demonstrated.
Opposition Leader Mark Speakman said the Coalition Government is consistently opposed to offshore mining activities because they pose consequences that may impact the environment.
Meanwhile, Shadow Environment Minister Kellie Sloane urged the Labor Government to support the legislation, noting that if it is not supported, ” uncertainty of future offshore exploration and mining will continue to hang over our coastal communities.”
Member for Pittwater Rory Amon, who will introduce the bill in the Parliament, said it supports a key election promise and deters anyone looking to drill for gas in NSW waters.
“I made clear prior to the election that this would be a priority of mine, and I am pleased that this is one of my first actions as the Member for Pittwater. This is a strong demonstration that the Coalition will continue to stand up for our communities, and the people of NSW, and act when the Labor Government fails to do so,” Amon stated.
