Mineral explorers in the Territory now have access to a new handbook that aims to make prospecting easier and more appealing to investors.
The revised Mineral Exploration Guide aids in the application process as well as the operational requirements after a mineral exploration license is granted.
“A strong exploration sector is critical to growing our economy, creating local jobs and ensuring the future of the Territory resources sector,” said Minister for Mining and Industry, Nicole Manison in a media release.
“We want to support this sector in every way we can, and this new Guide is designed to provide explorers with a straightforward overview of the Territory’s legislative requirements and other key matters that need to be considered.”
The handbook is meant to be a helpful tool for novice explorers, and it will help all parties understand their rights, obligations, and mutual responsibilities in meeting the Territory’s legal requirements.
Developed by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade, it is intended to go hand in hand with the ‘Code of Conduct for mineral explorers in the Northern Territory,’ and together they form a solid foundation for explorers to conduct their business while respecting the rights of landowners.
“During 2021, 444 new applications for mineral exploration licences were received. This was the most applications received in any year since 2009. And this is a 255% increase from the previous year,” Minister Manison said.
“The Territory Labor Government has been investing strongly in attracting and supporting mineral exploration though a range of geoscience and grants programs under our multi-million dollar Resourcing the Territory initiative.”
“As interest in exploration in the Territory increases, the provision of clear guidance and informing operators about how to navigate processes will go a long way in providing prospective investors to the Territory with the understanding they need to do business here,” said Cathryn Tilmouth NT Executive Director Minerals Council of Australia NT.
