Multiple DC rapid-charging options have opened across South Australia (SA) as part of the State Government-backed programs to expand the availability of rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging options across the State.

The SA Government and the RAA have turned on the first of 54 DC rapid and ultra-rapid charging stations in the Statewide EV Charging Network in Nuriootpa.

“Powered by renewable electricity, our Rapid and Ultra-Rapid chargers are the future of EV charging technology, and will help to make range anxiety a thing of the past for South Australian EV drivers,” RAA CEO Nick Reade said.

“These charging sites will help power South Australians through their regional road trips, allowing for only a short stop to plug in and grab a coffee or bite to eat before hitting the road again – fully charged,” Reade stated.

The RAA Charge network will include 86 AC Fast charging stations with a maximum output of 7kW, as well as 54 DC Rapid and Ultra-Rapid charging stations with maximum outputs of 150kW and 200kW, respectively, as part of a $12.35 million State Government grant to build and operate the State’s charging network.

Around 75% of the 140 charging stations planned for the network will be positioned in regional towns along highways, tourism spots, and popular holiday accommodation areas. The RAA has constructed 25% of the network so far.

“Regional and rural connectivity is a must, not just to make sure people living in the regions aren’t locked out of the benefits of owning an electric vehicle, but to incentivise people travelling to and through these areas,” Minister Tom Koutsantonis said.

“A statewide EV charging network is an important step on our journey to a net zero future. We look forward to watching the network continue to grow with South Australian motorists’ needs,” Minister Koutsantonis stated.

JET Charge, the Rocland Group, and Engie also unveiled ten new DC charging bays at Nuriootpa as part of the State Government’s $3.2 million EV Smart Charging Trials.

“The Rocland grid project will serve as a trial for the future of public smart charging, and will showcase a charging model that aligns with consumer needs,” JET Charge CEO Tim Washington said.

The DC chargers include fast charging capabilities, several charging bays, up to 150kW output, and time-of-use pricing and incentives for use during peak renewable energy generating periods.

According to the State Government, the launches represent a step towards SA’s goal of making EVs the default mode of transportation to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
