Synergy has installed the containerised battery systems at the Kwinana Battery Stage Two ahead of its expected completion in 2024, the Western Australian Government reported.

“The Kwinana Battery Stage Two is a key part of our energy transition, ensuring WA has cleaner, reliable and affordable energy in the future,” Premier Roger Cook said.

“These large-scale batteries allow us to pump more renewable energy into the grid while keeping our system stable — and it’s great to see this transition happened right in the heart of the Kwinana industrial strip,” Premier Cook stated.

The new battery system, once completed, will be capable of powering 370,000 average homes in WA for approximately four hours.

According to the State Government, the Kwinana Battery Stage Two has already generated around 160 jobs during construction.

The Cook Government is investing over $3 billion in renewable energy, including supporting Synergy’s expansion of battery assets to 3000MWh storage capacity by the end of 2025.

“My Government is doing what’s right by WA, investing in our State’s future to deliver a strong economy for generations to come,” Premier Cook said.

Energy Minister Reece Whitby said the news signifies an exciting milestone in the State’s renewable energy revolution.

The installation of the Kwinana batteries comes as Synergy prepares to start work on one of Australia’s largest lithium-based batteries in Collie early this year. Once completed, the battery will supply 500MW of power and 2000MWh of energy storage.

Large-scale battery storage is crucial for system stability and ensuring the continued use of renewable electricity generation in the South West Interconnected System.

“Renewables uptake is surging in WA with the SWIS at times powered by more than 80 per cent renewables,” Minister Whitby stated.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) delivered the newly installed battery systems for Kwinana Battery Stage Two. Power Electronics has been contracted to supply 72 inverters.
