Battery materials company Talga Group Ltd has secured an environmental permit for its commercial battery anode refinery in Luleå, Sweden.

The favourable verdict issued by the Swedish Land and Environment Court yesterday, 21 June 2023, includes a granted execution order, allowing the Company to begin Refinery construction groundworks in Q3 2023.

Talga Managing Director Mark Thompson commented: “The Court’s decision to permit Europe’s first commercial natural graphite anode plant is an exciting milestone for both Talga and the green transition. We are thrilled to move to the next stage of project development and to commence groundworks for the construction of the anode plant in Luleå. I am extremely proud of the Talga team in this achievement.”

The ruling is subject to an appeals process of three weeks. The execution order ensures that the construction of the battery anode refinery may proceed while any appeal procedure is underway.

The environmental permit was issued subject to requirements corresponding with the Detailed Feasibility Study and permit application submitted by Talga. The environmental permit approval comes after Luleå Municipality granted building permits, which went into effect on 24 March 2023, after no challenges were filed.
