The Tasmanian Government has launched the $8 million Green Hydrogen Price Reduction scheme to establish and stimulate a local green hydrogen industry.
Minister for Energy and Renewables Nick Duigan said the scheme would assist in developing supply and demand for locally-made green hydrogen.
“The price reduction scheme will stimulate demand for green hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels while also assisting with the cost of local production,” Minister Duigan stated.
According to the Minister, by lowering the sale price, industries will be encouraged to consider Tasmanian hydrogen for their fuel and energy needs.
“The Rockliff Liberal Government has a long-term plan to grow our economy and create jobs and a local green hydrogen industry will stimulate the renewables jobs of the future,” he said.
“This will also ensure that a sale price for green hydrogen is established and maintained for a number of years, bringing more stability for end-users,” he added.
The successful applicants will receive financing per kilogram of green hydrogen sold to end-users.
Minister Duigan stated that qualified projects must create and supply green hydrogen in Tasmania by 2025, with all hydrogen sold locally.
“This scheme complements the Government’s $300 million commitment to build open access infrastructure that will support export scale green hydrogen production at the Tasmanian Green Hydrogen Hub in Bell Bay,” Minister Duigan said.
He noted that the scheme will progress the State Government’s plan to become a leader in green hydrogen production.
The funding round provides a chance for small to medium businesses to establish collaborations with potential local hydrogen producers.
Applications will be open until 6 December 2023.
