The Tasmanian Government’s plans to become Australia’s renewables powerhouse have received a boost after TasRex announced its proposed solar and wind energy projects.

Minister for Energy and Renewables Nick Duigan said Tasmania is completely self-sufficient in renewable energy and has been doing so for the past nine years.

“Tasmania’s renewable status would not have been possible without the ingenuity and courage of thousands of Tasmanians through Hydro Tasmania and recent wind-farm developments,” Minister Duigan stated.

The State Government’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with TasRex covers onshore and offshore renewable energy opportunities, as well as their commitment to a Tasmanian supply chain and local jobs.

“We share the view that Tasmania is extremely well placed to develop more renewable energy to support our long-term plan for a growing economy and supporting jobs, many in regional communities,” Minister Duigan said.

According to him, Tasmania needs more renewable electricity to fulfil the demands of the State’s developing economy and future industries, to provide energy security, to keep power prices low, and maintain its zero-emissions status.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to increasing our renewable energy production. We are the renewables powerhouse of Australia and we intend to remain there, and projects by local companies like TasRex can help us to achieve this vision,” he stated.

Minister Duigan added that more energy implies more jobs and that by incorporating more renewable energy into the grid, Tasmania will have the lowest power pricing in the country.
