The Victorian Government released a consultation paper seeking industry input on its zero emissions bus trial.

As part of the State Government’s target of reaching net zero by 2045, all new public transport buses purchased from 2025 will be zero emission.

Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll has launched the consultation paper, which provides the framework for the transition plan to be released in 2024.

“Tackling emissions on our public transport network is critical to Victoria meeting its commitment of net zero emissions by 2045 and we’re seeking feedback from operators, industry and the wider community as we transition to a diesel-free bus fleet,” Minister Carroll said.

“The zero emission bus transition requires significant change and we are working with industry on how we use this opportunity to create a stronger industry, boost local manufacturing and improve customer experience,” Minister Carroll stated.

According to the State Government, the State is leading the way through its $20 million Zero Emission Bus trial, which is being implemented in collaboration with industry to inform the smooth transition of over 4,500 diesel buses to zero emissions.

Six operators in Victoria are participating in the three-year trial, which will see 52 zero-emission buses – 50 electric and two hydrogen – introduced into their fleets around Melbourne, Traralgon, and Seymour.

The pilot is building key local industry collaborations and sustaining local jobs, such as those with energy providers and bus manufacturers, which are critical to a smooth transition.

The State Government said the trial yielded data on performance, depot charging requirements, capacity, infrastructure and energy network requirements, environmental results, and consumer expectations.

The consultation paper emphasises the advantages of the industry trials. It seeks comments on how a zero emissions bus transition may reduce emissions, improve passenger experiences, and generate stable jobs in the bus sector.

Over 100 hybrid and 45 zero-emission buses are currently operating on Victoria’s public transport routes, with operators receiving positive comments from customers who enjoy a quieter and smoother ride.

“Zero emissions buses are a key part of our plan to decarbonise transport and meet Victoria’s world-leading emissions reduction targets of 75-80 percent by 2035 and net zero by 2045,” Minister for Climate Action Lily D’Ambrosio said.

Extra funding was also pledged in the 2023-24 Victorian Budget to double the speed at which zero emission buses are being introduced as part of new 10-year metropolitan bus contracts.

These contracts, which cover 30% of the metro network, are set to expire in 2025. Developing a greener fleet is also part of Victoria’s Bus Plan, which aims to build a modern, dependable network that attracts more passengers.
