Energy Minister Bill Johnston has launched Western Power’s $123 million energy hub designed to satisfy Western Australia’s expanding energy demands.

The South Metro Depot in Forrestdale, built by ADCO and designed by SPH Architects, would provide greater community services and integrate the Kewdale, Jandakot, Forrestfield, and Mt Claremont depots.

“Western Power’s new South Metro Depot has been designed for the future – to support the rapid transformation of the grid, while continuing to deliver safe and reliable power,” Minister Johnston said.

“The facility emphasises the Cook Government’s commitment to continue to deliver safe, reliable and affordable energy for all Western Australians,” Johnston added.

Western Power dubbed the depot Boyli Mia, meaning Power House, in consultation with local Noongar and Ballardong Elders, and it incorporates Aboriginal artwork by Bradley Kickett and Buffie Corunna.

Boyli Mia employs around 850 people and houses 500 vehicles, as well as cutting-edge workshops and laboratories that provide various services.

It has 34 electric vehicle charging stations, a one-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System, 10,000 square metres of solar panels (to reduce energy usage), and a drive-through undercover loading bay with 28 bays.

“Western Power’s new South Metro Depot facility will be a central hub for energy services in the Perth metro region and provide fit-for-purpose and enhanced facilities for its employees,” Jandakot MLA Yaz Mubarakai said.

“This is a great addition for Forrestdale and the surrounding community, as the 850 staff will help support local businesses in the area,” Mubarakai added.
