Queensland is set to strengthen its partnership with the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, with Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment Cameron Dick renewing the collaboration during his Trade Mission to Latin America.

The Treasurer signed the third iteration of the two states’ Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which was first created in 2011.

“Queensland is proving itself to be a world leader in the mining equipment, technology and services sector, so this MoU is of immense benefit,” Treasurer Dick said.

According to Treasurer Dick, for the past 11 years, Queensland and Minas Gerais have worked together to identify business opportunities in the mining industry. He added that Queensland places a high value on these information exchanges.

Minas Gerais, being a major producer of bauxite, iron, gold, and zinc, is at the core of the Brazilian mining sector and has proven to be an important market for Queensland businesses in the mining, equipment, technology, and services (METS) sector.

Phibion, one of Queensland’s top METS exporters, has its Brazilian operations in Minas Gerais and has recently earned its largest contract in the country.

The renewed MOU encourages collaboration in education, collaborative research, infrastructure, mining equipment, technology and services, clean energy, and environmental management, as well as in the resources and agriculture sectors.

“We each have a lot to offer the other and we look forward to continuing our work together in existing and emerging areas of mutual benefit,” Treasurer Dick added.
