This year, the Western Australian (WA) Government will introduce climate change legislation to create a framework for responsible emissions reduction to fulfil WA’s target of net zero by 2050.
In a statement, the State Government said the legislation would also formalise the State’s goal of reducing its emissions by 80 per cent below 2020 levels by 2030.
“Climate change is the greatest challenge of our lifetime. We need to take decisive action this decade. This legislation will help accelerate our transition to net zero emissions in a responsible and achievable way,” Climate Action Minister Reece Whitby said.
Minister Whitby stated that legislation sends a powerful signal about the Government’s goals and leadership. The Minister added that it includes the Government’s aim to reduce its emissions by 80 per cent by 2030.
“This will help unlock critical investment in clean energy infrastructure and technologies, ultimately reducing costs for businesses,” Minister Whitby said.
He stated: “We’re taking significant action to combat climate change. A new adaptation strategy will be released this year to help enhance our State’s climate resilience and ensure adaptation is reflected in Government decision-making.”
It will serve as a foundation for the State’s climate change response and provide confidence and stability to industry, business, and investors.
The Act will impose statutory obligations on the State Government to set interim emission reduction objectives and prepare adaptation measures to the effects of climate change.
According to the Government, It implies that WA will have clear and required policies to cut emissions, assisting in the mobilisation of private sector resources for the net zero transition and improving climate resilience.
Acting Energy Minister Sue Ellery said the legislation would encourage investment in clean energy infrastructure and technology, assisting WA in establishing itself as a green energy powerhouse.
“It will also enhance business confidence and stimulate change to accelerate WA’s clean energy switch,” Minister Ellery stated.
The legislation will provide accountability and transparency by requiring the Minister for Climate Action to report to Parliament on WA’s net emissions and progress towards reduction targets yearly.
