Following the first forum held in Perth last November, two Karratha forums for petroleum and major hazard facility operators are scheduled for this month to promote saving lives by making risks “As Low as Reasonably Practicable” – or ALARP.

Scheduled to take place on 17 and 18 February, 2015, the forums will underpin how workers from the petroleum industry and major hazard facility operators can reduce their risks and promote ways to improve safety outcomes in Western Australia’s resources industry.

The forums will also detail requirements of the Department of Mines and Petroleum’s for documenting safety cases and reports.

“It has been more than 25 years since the Piper Alpha oil production explosion where 167 men died in the North Sea and forever changed safety in the industry. While such incidents are rare, the potential consequences of ignoring warning signs or failing to address the safety risks can be catastrophic,” said Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion in a news release.

“Attendees at the Perth event provided feedback that it was extremely informative and helped operators improve internal processes, while reducing review times for safety case reports submitted to the department. Forums like these are an important part of our work with the petroleum sector to improve safety outcomes in Western Australia’s resources industry.”
